Do you need a baby toy?

Nice to have Babies need very few toys. High-contrast cards, a rattle and a couple of stacking or cause-and-effect toys cover the first year, and many arrive as gifts.

Secondhand: Secondhand with checks. Fine used if intact; check CPSC recalls and skip anything cracked, peeling or with loose parts.

Typical use: about 12 months.

Tip: Rotate a few toys instead of buying many.

What matters in a baby toy

Babies need few toys. Look for sizes too big to choke on, no small parts or loose cords, and materials made for mouthing: solid wood with water-based finishes, natural rubber, food-grade silicone or BPA-, PVC- and phthalate-free plastic. Every toy for children under 3 sold in the US must meet federal small-parts, lead and phthalate rules, so recall history and how easy a toy is to clean matter most.

3 have a safety or materials point to know about, noted in the reviews below.

What makes a baby toy non-toxic?

Every toy sold in the US for children under 3 must meet federal limits on lead and certain phthalates and the small-parts ban. On top of that, look for:

  • Materials made for mouthing: solid wood with water-based finishes, natural rubber, food-grade silicone, or plastic labeled free of BPA, PVC and phthalates.
  • No hidden water traps. Squeeze toys with holes can grow mold inside; choose sealed toys for the bath.
  • Easy cleaning. Dishwasher-safe or wipe-clean toys stay hygienic longer.
  • Recall history. Most toy recalls are for choking, from parts that come loose, so we check CPSC for each toy.

Fat Brain Toys Dimpl (About $10) scores highest on value and longevity among baby toys with a Good or Excellent score.

Are any baby toys recalled?

None of the 7 baby toys on this page has an open recall in our latest check. Always check the CPSC recall database (or NHTSA for car seats) before you buy or use a product.

What toys does a 3-month-old need?

Very few. High-contrast cards for looking, a light rattle to grasp and plenty of floor time cover it. Babies this age mostly need you.

What are good toys for 6 to 12 months?

Toys that respond to what baby does: stacking cups, push-and-pop toys and pound-and-roll benches build fine motor skills and teach cause and effect.

Are BPA-free toys safe?

BPA-free is a good start, but alternatives such as BPS can be used instead. For toys babies mouth a lot, food-grade silicone, natural rubber or solid wood are simpler choices.

How does Cradle Score rate products?

Each score is 40% materials and safety, 40% parent and tester consensus, and 20% value and longevity. Every product page lists its sources and when we last checked it, and brands cannot pay for placement.
